Vacoa Timber Cladding

Vacoa is a thermally modified Nordic Pine. Thermally modified timber means it has been heated to over 210 °C in the absence of oxygen. This process introduces chemical changes to the structures of cell wall components (lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose) in the wood to increase its durability. The timber is heated in an environment with low oxygen to prevent burning at high temperatures. Once thermally modified, the timber absorbs less water, consequently increasing decay resistance while decreasing swelling and shrinking. Thermally modified wood is far more durable than its previous state.

Shiplap is a different profile to weatherboard, Shiplap has a 10mm shadow line groove at the join where as weatherboard slopes slightly away from the wall. Vacoa is available in the Trendplank / Shiplap profile.

Yes, the Nordic Pine used to manufacture Vacoa is a plantation grown timber.

The stain we use on Vacoa is a danish oil called WOCA Exterior Oil. This is a high performing environmentally friendly timber coating that outlasts many other cheap coating products on the market. As our products are used in many different environments it’s hard to give an accurate answer to both these questions. As a guide, we have seen a factory coat of WOCA oil on Vacoa remain colourfast for approx 18 months to 2 years. A maintenance recoat of the WOCA oil is recommended every 2-3 years to maintain Vacoa timber cladding, there are cases where a re-coat will be required more frequently than this. We recommend to inspect the timber cladding every 6 months for early signs of weathering and apply a maintenance coat accordingly.

Vacoa thermal conductivity is 0.099. The R-value of a material is determined by dividing the thickness  (in metres) by the thermal conductivity of the material so the R-value of 19mm thick Vacoa is R 0.2. R = Thickness (m) / Conductivity (W/mK) =0.019 / 0.099 = 0.2 (m²·K/W).
